Genetically Modified Food Part 3 - What you can do!

Welcome to part 3 of our discussion of genetically modified food. If you missed the first 2 parts you will find them at:

Genetically Modified Food Part 1

Genetically Modified Food Part 2

Genetically modified (GM) food crept into the market place unnoticed.

How come?

  • Our government decided that if genetically modified food looked and tasted like food, then it must be ok. What do you think?
  • On top of that, the government decided that GM food did not have to be identified as genetically modified (by a totally unnatural and potentially dangerous method that may cause slow disability and death). Therefore the USDA does not require manufacturers to label ingredients as GM.

So what recourse do we as consumers have to protect ourselves since reading labels does not help?

Here are some "keep it simple" suggestions:

  • Buy organic food

Certified organic products must be 100 % free of any GM food. Therefore, when you purchase products labeled "100% organic," "organic," or "made with organic ingredients," all ingredients in these products may not contain any GM food. If the product label says "made with organic ingredients" only 70% of the ingredients have to be organic, but 100% must be non-GM.

  • Watch for "non-GM" or "non-GMO" (genetically modified organisms) labels

Companies may voluntarily label products as "non-GMO". Some labels state "non-GMO" while others spell out "Made Without Genetically Modified Ingredients". Some products limit their claim to only one particular "At-Risk" ingredient such as soy lecithin, listing it as "non-GMO".

  • Avoid food products made with the most common GM food. The "Big Four" GM crops include:
  1. Corn
  2. Soybeans
  3. Canola
  4. Cottenseed

As you can see, GM food adds to our reasons for not buying thrashed, bashed, over heated, processed packaged food. Such "death foods" most likely contain GM food on top of all the abnormalities induced by the processing of the food. What kind of dysfunctional food are we talking about here?

The list could be endless, but includes anything that contains corn-syrup. That in itself could be another long list since corn syrup and high-fructose corn syrup have become the most common sweeteners found in soft drinks, candy, pastries, bread (even whole wheat bread), etc.

Then there's cornflake cereal, cornstarch-based non-dairy creamers, corn starch used in baking.

So, just don't buy that junk.

For a list of companies that refuse to use genetically modified food, check out this web site:

Non-GMO Shopping Guide

You’re wise. You took responsibility for your health and got rid of all the dysfunctional food a long time ago. Now you’re eating a lot of great vegetable and fruit, meat, nuts and whole grains. You might think you don’t have to worry about GM food in your diet.

Unfortunately, that’s not the case. The biotech companies and big agriculture even adulterated tomatoes, strawberries, potatoes and just about any crop you can think of with genetic modifications.

How do we avoid genetically modified vegetables and fruit?

  • Again, buy organic
  • Secondly, read the stickers on the produce in the market. Here's the PLU deciphering code:

Organically grown fruit has 5 numbers prefaced by the number 9

GM fruit has 5 numbers prefaced by the number 8

Non-organic, non-GM fruit has 4 numbers

Be a powerful consumer. Force the manufacturers to grow real wholesome food by not buying any processed or GM food.

That’s just what I've been advocating for years, even before GM food sneaked into our grocery stores. Eating according to the Get Healthy Eating Plan in Dr. Jo's Natural Healing Cookbook makes it fun and easy to fix scrumptious, beautiful, healthy meals for a beautiful healthy you. (Just be sure to buy non-GM vegetables and fruit. Better yet grow some of your own veggies.)

Blessings

Dr. Jo
