Genetically Modified Food Part 2 - What the government is not doing.

So at the end of part 1 of the genetically modified food article we concluded that the biotech companies should have to prove that genetically modified (GM) food is safe.

Unfortunately, that's not our government's conclusion at this time. It thinks that if the GM food looks and tastes like natural food, it can be regarded as safe. Now how presumptuous is that? Seems like the ostrich sticking its head in the sand concept. If we can't see it, then it must be ok.

Would the government say the same thing about arsenic laced food? It looks and tastes like real food. But it certainly has dramatic acute consequences.

Unfortunately, the consequences of eating genetically modified food may not show up or be recognized for years because the symptoms don't come on suddenly and dramatically.

Do you remember when the FDA banned the sale of tryptophan (an amino acid) in 1989? I do. It was a big deal. But I was surprised to realize that tryptophan was banned because a company had manufactured genetically modified tryptophan. The genetic modifications made it poisonous to human beings.

People were ill with mysterious, very strange symptoms for a long time. They experienced severe pain, hair loss, memory loss, muscle weakness, uncontrollable muscle spasms, and hardening of the skin.

Finally, someone traced the cause of these debilitating problems back to the consumption of L-tryptophan. Once the news story hit the press, thousands of people came forward with the same mysterious symptoms.

As many as 10,000 people were affected and 100 died.

Here's the point. Genetically modified food may be poisoning us, but we don't know it. The GM tryptophan induced acute illness. But other GM foods may induce illness so slowly that the link to the genetically modified food is very subtle and hard to detect.

We not only have difficulty recognizing GM food induced symptoms, we don't even know what food is genetically modified and what is not. To add to the audacity that GM food must be ok if it looks and tastes like real food, the government does not require food companies to reveal on the label that their food has been genetically modified. Does that seem like the ultimate deception?

So here we are as consumers, unknowingly eating genetically modified food. Have we become the big food company's guinea pigs?

Why genetically modify food anyway? The big food/seed producing companies give the argument that it will increase the amount of food produced. But numerous study show increased production has not happened except for the Bt corn.

The second reason for genetic modification: Pesticides and herbicides will kill the weeds without killing the food crop. But what if the gene for pesticide resistance escapes to the weeds? Will we wind up with super weeds that become uncontrollable?

Lots of questions unanswered. Lots of unknowns. Lots of experimenting on us.
