Chelation - Detox Concerns?
Chelation therapy removes toxic metals from the tissues. These toxic metals accumulate in our bodies because of exposure to environmentally contaminated air, water and food. We are all exposed to and accumulate toxic metals like cadmium, lead, nickel, aluminum and mercury in our bodies. More and more people are realizing the need to cleanse these toxins out of our tissues if we want to be optimally healthy.
Edta chelation therapy is a very effective cleansing method to remove this toxic metal burden from the body.
Before anyone embarks on a program to remove toxins from the body, they naturally have concerns about reactions or side effects they may experience.
Detoxification symptoms commonly crop up when a person is undergoing cleansing.
When the toxins are tucked inside the cell, they interfere with cellular chemistry and decrease energy production.
When they come out of the cell, the toxins are back in contact with nerves where they cause symptoms because they irritate the nerves.
Those cleansing or detox reactions can occur with any cleansing program and commonly manifest as:
- pain
- headaches
- nausea
- fatigue
- post-nasal drainage
- runny nose
- behavior changes
- muscle pain
- muscle weakness
- gastrointestinal disturbances
- sleep disturbance
Fortunately we rarely see any of these side effects with edta chelation therapy because edta binds the toxic metals so tightly. They bypass the connective tissue quickly and are removed through the urine and bowel. This quick removal from the body prevents contact with the nerves and so many of the detox symptoms above are avoided.
Also, the route of administration of edta affects the type of side effects or detox reactions that a person may experience. When I administered edta in my office, we watched for the following reactions (but seldom saw them since side effects from edta chelation therapy are quite rare when administered carefully and appropriately):
I occasionally saw:
- Fatigue day of chelation
- Fatigue longer than 1 day - suspect mineral depletion
- Drop in blood sugar during chelation - eat before chelation for prevention
- Headache - generally a detox reaction - take Chlorella and drink more water
Side effects listed but rarely or never seen in my office:
- Nausea and vomiting, again a detox reaction
- Inflammation of the vein where the needle is inserted
- Drop in blood calcium during the IV
- Liver stress
Now with the new simple in-home chelation method by rectal suppository of edta (Detoxamin), side effects are almost non-existent. Using a lower dose of edta over a longer time period prevents the development of side effects and becomes safer for the kidneys and liver.
Occasionally I have felt a little tired a day or two after using a Detoxamin suppository. That's probably because my body can start moving the toxic chemicals out of my cells once edta removes the toxic metals. As those chemicals come out, they cause a little fatigue which can be quickly remedied by taking come chlorella to absorb those toxic chemicals and carry them quickly out of my body.
Chelation may also deplete needed body minerals which can also lead to fatigue. But that should never happen because people are always instructed to take a multiple vitamin and mineral when using chelation therapy in any form, IV or by rectal suppository.
So, be assured that side effects are rare and minimal when using the new in-home chelation therapy with Detoxamin.
